Different people will have a different definition, however, from the Bible, it is actually clear what it means to be a Christian. In Acts 11:26 followers of Jesus Christ were first called Christians in Antioch. Therefore, a Christian is a person who is a follower or disciple of Jesus Christ.
It is important to realize that a real follower of Jesus is going to be a person who attempts to live his/her life as closely as possible to the way Jesus would live and act.
The next question to ask is "how do I become a follower of Jesus Christ?" Please read the answer to that question elsewhere under the FAQs. |

The Bible is clear on how a person becomes a Christian. When one becomes a Christian, he/she receives salvation. You are saved from spending eternity in Hell. You are saved from living the rest of your life without God. You are saved from being a slave to sin.
Let's talk for a moment about how you do NOT become a Christian. Some believe that you automatically become a Christian by going to church. That is not correct. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian anymore than going to McDonalds makes you a hamburger. You don't become a Christian by keeping the 10 Commandments or by being baptized. There is nothing you can do or work you can perform to earn your salvation.
The reason you need to be saved and become a Christian is because you have sinned. Romans 3:23 says, "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." This means everyone has sinned or done things wrong. Romans 6:23 tells us what we earn for our sin. "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Because we can't do anything to earn our forgiveness or salvation, God had to provide a way for us to receive forgiveness for our sins. That is where Jesus comes in. Romans 10:9-10 says, " that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."
You become a Christian by faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." That means you can be saved only because of God's grace not because of anything you have done. The work of salvation is beyond any human accomplishment.
If you are ready to ask God to forgive your sins and to commit your life to Jesus, all you need to do is beleive and ask. To do that you simply say a prayer. Read the prayer below and if you truly mean it, you will have received your salvation.
Dear God,
I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me of my sins. Come into my life now. Help me to change my life and to live for you. Amen.
If you prayed that prayer, CONGRATULATIONS!!! It is important that you get involved in a church and begin to grow in your relationship with God. To get started on this, please e-mail me at

Congratulatins on giving your life to Jesus. That is the greatest and best thing you could ever do with your life. You can only become a Christian by faith (see the FAQ "How Do I Become a Christian?" for more information on this). You do not become a Christian by keeping a bunch of rules, but God does have rules on how we are to live and because you have given your life to him, you need to obey those rules, and more importantly, you should want to obey him. Remember, you made him Lord of your life.
The best thing you can do is get involved in a church that will teach you how to grow in your faith and welcome you into their family. You need to begin reading the Bible and praying. I recommend that you begin reading the Bible with the book of John, then Matthew, and then Romans.
Praying is not hard, it is just something you are unfamiliar with it. It is something new. You will learn how over time and as you gain experience, you will become more comfortable. In our church we have a class we teach to help new believers get started on their walk with God and we also do a class on how to pray.
It may seem like there is a lot to do and learn. There is, but you don't have to learn it all today. The Bible refers to new believers as "Babes in Christ." Just like a new born baby takes years to learn to walk and talk, dress and feed themselves, so it will take you time to learn to walk and talk with God, but you will learn. Also, don't get frustrated when you struggle or fall. CHildren all fall and suffer their bumps when they are learning to walk.
